Deep in the central plateau of the North Island, Taupo, as a result of a huge volcanic eruption 300,000 years ago, created for this region the largest lake in New Zealand - Lake Taupo, which is the size of Singapore. It is said that 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice were ejected at the time; and the last major eruption, in 180 AD, spewed so much ash into the sky that it turned the sky red. The eruption was recorded in both ancient Rome and ancient China - the birth of Lake Taupo is quite legendary and has wowed many eyes as a result. Of course, the area is still geologically active and exceptionally rich in geothermal resources. This also gives Lake Taupo a unique natural endowment. This lake, no need to squeeze out between the mountains in an effort to move forward in the waterway, but gently diffuse, on the vast expanse of water, rounded and full, sometimes blue, and suddenly stacked emerald.
